Today I will give you a quick overview of the geometric chair transformation, a few re-upholstery tips, and you'll get to meet the wonderful woman that I collaborated with on this project, my mom! You'll find the end product, specs, and gallery here.
At the start of the year, my mom started working for a local company that specialized in luxury dental chairs. Often times they had excess fabric and employees were allowed to bring the scraps home if they would so choose, so my mother knowing very well how much I looove to refurbish materials, started collecting various colors of this luxury treated leather fabric as well as foam padding and began bringing me loads and loads of the stuff for all my creative needs! Moms are the greatest aren't they?
However, because the leather pieces were scraps, we had to come up with a creative way to incorporate them into our cushions so that not only were the chairs comfortable but also stylish. I'm really into the look of geometric shapes at the moment, so we decided to go for a diamond design to complement the sharp angles of the rest of the piece. My mom, being fabulously talented in her sewing craft, came over to help me assemble the cushion. A few days later, many hours of experimentation, and tons of trial and error, and the diamond cushion was born!
We ended up also adding a unique Burberry-esque lining underneath the cushion for a little custom touch. I love adding these little details. I think small little surprises like this are really what makes a piece special. I'm just so happy with how it all turned out! It's always so satisfying when a plan comes together.
Reupholstery Bonus Tip
Out of any tip I can give, by far the most valuable is going to be on how to save you time! If you've ever attempted to reupholster anything before, you know just how tedious the process can be! Before you start your re-upholstery journey, there's going to be two main tools that I have found to be an absolute must have. I would say that these two tools shaved off about 1 hour of time, perhaps even more. The key is definitely to invest in the right set of tools! I have tried lots of different types of staple lifters and pliers, and these two most definitely take the cake! Click here to see a list of all my favorite products!
Meet My Mom
Meet Carla, my beautiful mother. She is a skilled seamstress with many years of experience in various types of projects. Some of her projects include wedding apparel, home decor, window treatments, skydiving rigs, dental chair upholstery, outdoor sports equipment, and even doll's apparel!
My mom learned how to sew from watching her grandmother while she still lived in Brazil. She's never taken a sewing class, and is completely self taught from watching others which I am just completely amazed by!
I have the fondest memories of admiring her in her sewing room while she made Halloween costumes, dresses, and various outfits for me. I would try to mimic her by keeping busy trying to make miniature clothes for my dolls.
She is one of the most magnificent women I know and I am proud to get to be her daughter! We have had some talks about joining forces so be on the lookout for an announcement soon! Meanwhile, here are a few words of advice from Momma Carla:
“Creative work: when you make a mistake or something goes wrong it feels at first like a failed moment. However; what is really happening is what I like to call a creative door. Creative doors allow creativity to be released from within all of us! Creativity is problem solving with a tint of art. Therefore; bigger obstacles leads to more creative work!”
